ABOUT ME

What's up!

I am Joaquin Ruiz, a versatile sports journalist from Whittier, CA.

I graduated from Cal in 2026 and currently serve as a sports correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, where I frequently cover the Chargers, Dodgers and several other local teams. Building on my reputation as a student reporter, I also remain an authority on Golden Bears football and basketball for Bear Insider, often flying to the Bay to keep tabs on my alma mater.

Previously, I worked at NBC Sports Bay Area for three years before graduating from Berkeley, developing from an intern into an editor while writing over 1,000 articles. I also have several bylines in Yahoo Sports and The Mercury News.

I pour my heart into my work. Having grown up as an athlete -- I played football, my favorite sport, for 13 years -- and as an avid reader, I tell stories for sickos, novices, and everyone in between. 

Whether I am covering an intersection of sports and society, a playoff game, a profile, a trade-turned-contract-extension or simply a newser, I treat every story with dignity and respect, delivering what each moment demands.
